Never underestimate the importance of a good dam-line. Utah's performance is no accident when you study his bloodlines in detail.
His pedigree in it's entirety reads like a who's who of the best and most proven producers of successfull sporthorses. |
|
|
In 4th generation you have the great stallions like Ramiro, Amor, Marco Polo (twice since he is also the sire of Miro), as well as the British Thoroughbred Pericles, followed by Omira the dam of Amira by Samber and her full brother the Grand Prix dressage stallion Fine Art (now deceased) who stood in the USA.
Whereby the bottom line of many pedigrees is often sketchy in terms of performance, it is obvious from the sheer regularity and production of successfull offspring from Amira that this is a very strong performance line. Also of note, in Landetto's dam line, the mare, Retina, by Ramzes x, who is the dam of Capitano, who is the sire of the Holstein great, Capitol I.
A brown son of Amira , Tabasco van Erpekom by Darco, is jumping Grand Prix successfully in Ireland whilst Willem Van Erpekom by Limbo out of Lakotah is in the ownership of Georgina Forbes and is standing at stud in France.
Another son of Amira the CHAPS graded stallion Victor Van Erpekom by Limbo is successfully jumping Newcomers and foxhunters and is currently standing at stud in Somerset.

UTAH IS UNIQUE
Not only is he now a world class jumping horse, competing Internationally and winning in the best of company but he is also carrying that Tobiano gene that makes him stand out in a crowd!
It's every breeders dream to produce a world class horse, but as any coloured horse breeder knows, combining talented bloodlines and colour is a real challenge.
Belgian breeder, Willy Ulenaers has achieved all of that in Utah.
' Van Erpekom' is the suffix of Willy Ulenaers' breeding enterprise where Utah was foaled in 1997. Branded as a foal with the Belgian warmblood studbook (BWP) he was sold and then bought by John Whittaker, who is known for his eye for a good horse in any colour. Utah jumped under the name of 'Virtual Village Utah' as a four and five-year-old.

Ever wondered why Utah had such a seemingly long name?
It only means Utah from Erpekom, the little village where he was born in May '97. The letter 'U' denoted the names of all horses born that year in Belgium, much the same as in Holland and France, you can tell the age of a horse by the first letter of it's name. Shame that in Britain we have so little discipline when it comes to naming horses. So often their names bear no resemblance or give no clue to their lineage.
Willy Ulenaers always had a passion for Pinto horses, as a child he accompanied his father and older brother on a trip to a horse dealers yard where they were looking for a horse to buy for the family. Willy was heart-broken when the coloured one he wanted was not the one they brought home.
|
|
Willy confesses to not being a talented rider but he does know about bloodlines and he follows show jumping in particular, always interested in which stalions and which bloodlines are winning. Willy considers himself lucky to have been able to buy Amira when he did, after all she is the one who has regularly delivered the goods in both first and second generation crosses.
Earlier this year, whilst I was researching Utah, I had the pleasure of speaking to Willy who was under the impression that Utah had been gelded since he had seen Utah listed in the results as a gelding. Since then, we have visited Willy and Heidi, seen Amira, Lakotah and reciprocated with Willy visiting Utah at Ben's yard in Bishops Stortford.
Willy has also bought frozen semen from Utah with a view to inseminating some of his unrelated mares.
