News - March 2005
Cevin Z is now back with William Funnell, being brought back into work,
to continue his International showjumping career in 2005. Cevin will spend
the whole year with William and so won't be standing at stud, his semen
being available frozen from West Kington Stud at a special fee of £500 for 2005/6.
Cevin started 2004 by going on the Funnell Factor tour with William and Pippa
visiting 5 major venues in the UK. This is available on video/DVD and makes very
amusing viewing, showing Cevin playing to the gallery which he loves. Cevin didn't
compete in 2004 and returned to Catherston Stud for covering duties. He covered
40 quality mares most of whom were showjumpers. The first foals will be due later
this month. It had been planned to qualify him for Horse of the Year Show 2004, but
William had an injury which required surgery and so we decided to send Cevin early
to West Kington Stud, to be quarantined in order to freeze semen for America and the
Southern Hemisphere. We now have an agent in America who is Christine Miller from
Stallion Services, Equine Medical Center, Ocala, Florida. Christine already markets
the Catherston stallions amongst many more top UK stallions as does our agent in Sweden
who is Sarah Borg. We have also received enquiries from South Africa and New Zealand.
Having concentrated on stallion duties in 2004 Cevin will be eager to return to showjumping
in 2005 which is the job he loves most of all!
We are very excited at the moment because his first daughter, who is just 4, and known
as Smartie, is currently with Steven Franks. Steven was William Funnell's stable jockey
until last Summer, and competed Cevin as a young stallion, culminating in a fourth place
in the Foxhunter final at Horse of the Year Show 2003. Steven has just backed Smartie
which took all of 2 days! (just like Dad) and is bringing her on to hopefully be in the ring
this Summer( see Smartie at bottom of page). Steven is delighted with her progress; she
is showing Cevin's wonderful temperament and attitude to the job, and has been easy so
far. I saw her this week (3/3/05) when I took my equine therapist Tracy Brolan to check
both Smartie and Cevin before they start their busy year, and I was delighted with what I
saw. Smartie has only been with Steven for 1 month and is already showing 3 good paces
and has a natural balance and a great attitude to a jump. Cevin is stamping his offspring
very well and Smartie looks very like him. She is out of my Hannoverian mare Gaia, who
is a Gotthard grand daughter, and jumped internationally. William Funnell also has some
2 and 3 year olds waiting in the wings and Jennie Loriston-Clarke has a 3 year old colt
by Cevin, which she thinks highly of.
